Karina Fernández: From Technical Learning to Leading Her Company in San Miguel
May 7, 2025
In a small technical training classroom, where cables, tools, and manuals were part of the daily routine, Karina Fernández took her first steps towards what she is today: a recognized businesswoman in air conditioning and electrical services in eastern El Salvador.
It was in 2020, at the height of social and economic challenges, when Karina decided to enroll in the Fourth Category Residential Electrical Installations courses promoted by AES El Salvador and Instituto Salvadoreño para el Desarrollo de la Mujer (ISDEMU).

"I knew I wanted more for my life. I wasn't afraid to learn something that had historically been for men," Karina recalls with a smile that reflects conviction and pride.
Originally from San Miguel, this Salvadoran woman trained as an electrician in an environment where few women venture into the technical world. For her, that first step was more than just learning: it was a declaration of independence and a step towards a better future.
After completing the course, Karina didn't stop. She began taking on independent jobs, gradually gaining clientele, always with quality as her standard. "From the beginning, I told myself that if I did my job well, I wouldn't have to convince anyone with words. My work would speak for me," affirms.
Five years later, the seed she planted with effort has become to “Aire Global Climatizado”, a company dedicated to installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioners, as well as electrical services. The name reflects a broad and modern vision, but also the will to grow without limits.

Today, Karina leads a team of workers where men and women collaborate under equal conditions, in a sector where gender stigmas still persist. "It's not about being a woman or being a man. It's about doing it well, with responsibility and passion. What matters here is the commitment to the client and to ourselves".
The company has managed to position itself strongly in the eastern part of the country, providing services to both homes and businesses, and expanding its presence in neighboring departments. Part of its success lies in its close relationship with clients and the approachable leadership she does.
"Starting a business hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it. Sometimes you have to climb a ladder under the sun, carry heavy equipment, or spend hours solving a complicated electrical problem. But I would do it a thousand times over if it means moving forward with what I have built," she says.

Beyond her business success, Karina has become a role model for other women interested in entering technical careers, a historically male-dominated field. Her story demonstrates that with training, determination, and vision, it is possible to break barriers and build a different future.
I always say: “don't let your fear be stronger than your desire. If I achieved it, many can do it. They just need an opportunity and to believe in themselves," she concludes.
Karina Fernández not only installs electrical systems and air conditioners but also connects dreams with opportunities. And in that circuit of effort, perseverance, and talent, she builds her own path to success, thus accelerating the future of energy in eastern El Salvador.
