AES El Salvador: Energy for a sustainable future

August 21, 2025

In a world marked by climate challenges, resource scarcity, and an increasingly aware public, incorporating sustainability into a business model is a fundamental step for all organizations that want to make a truly positive impact on their environment.

Conscious of this, sustainability has been the fundamental pillar of companies like AES El Salvador, which seek to manage their business with a long-term vision. The company’s commitment to positively impacting the present and future of the region has led it, as an energy sector company, to rethink how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed so that it can be a resource that improves lives and drives more resilient and sustainable societies.

One of its most emblematic ventures is the AES Meanguera del Golfo plant. Thanks to its innovative operational scheme, which combines distributed generation with integrated battery storage technology, it provides a 24/7 carbon-free electricity supply to the communities on the islands of the Gulf of Fonseca. This overcomes geographic limitations and lays the foundation for more inclusive, efficient, and flexible energy models.

This project is part of the 16 power plants that the company already operates through its Generation Division—15 solar and one biogas—in addition to the construction of its 17th solar plant in the western part of the country, which will have an installed capacity of 55 megawatts.

Additionally, with its Solutions Division, the company supports the industrial and commercial sectors in their transition toward cleaner and more efficient operations by offering a wide range of sustainable energy solutions. These include solar rooftops for self-consumption, energy efficiency audits, efficient lighting, and renewable energy certificates (RECs).

Electric mobility, for its part, has become an ally for reducing CO2 emissions and, with it, improving air quality in cities. For this purpose, AES El Salvador has installed a network of publicly accessible charging stations in different locations across the country and is progressively updating its operational vehicle fleet with 100% electric cars.

Finally, sustainability is also reflected in its operational practices. The efforts of its Distribution Division are transforming and modernizing the electrical grid through a strong commitment to digitalization, automation, and efficiency to deliver energy to its 1.6 million customers.

In a time of global transformation, companies like AES El Salvador demonstrate that sustainability is not a distant goal, but a pillar that defines them and a compass that guides them toward more efficient, responsible, and innovative business models.
